Deep Unto Deep 2
This is just something I’m pursuing and I’m posting some of my notes here.
The Doctrine of the Joy and Gladness of God
Premise 1: That God is mostly glad and joyful
God was joyful and glad in heart from eternity past and forever. God is eternally glad in His own being. Proverbs 8:30 gives us a glimpse of the Godhead at the time of the forming of creation.
“then I was beside Him as a master craftmen; and I was daily His delight. Rejoicing always before Him. Rejoicing in His inhabited world and my delight was with the sons of men.” (bold mine)
This is one of few verses that give us insight into the interaction of Jesus and the Father at the time of creation. Notice the words delight and rejoice used four times. As Jesus speaks of His time with the father, it’s very clear that they are sharing a relationship full of joy and gladness in one another and man. About the Holy Spirit we know that he is the oil of joy(Isaiah 61) and one of the fruits of having the holy spirit is joy (Galatians 5) because Holy Spirit is joy. Psalm 46:4 declares that there is a river, that makes glad the city of God. Jesus uses water and rivers many times in the gospel to describe the life giving flow of Holy Spirit. It’s possible this river continually making glad the city of God is Holy Spirit, and I believe it is. About God we know that there is fullness of joy in His presence (psalm 16), that He is slow to anger and also His anger does not last forever with those who fear Him (psalm 103). About Jesus we know that He was the most glad man on the earth during His lifetime. In psalm 45, God describes how He has annointed Jesus with the oil of gladness more than all His companions. Through the word, it’s safe to establish that the trinity is eternally glad and joyful within their fellowship together.
